Your first SoulCycle class is designed to feel welcoming, guided, and doable — even if you’re brand new to indoor cycling. You’ll ride to music in a candlelit room, move at your own pace, and be supported by both the instructor and studio team. Expect clear guidance, encouragement, and a workout that meets you where you are.
Arriving a little early makes a big difference.
Plan to get to the studio about 15 minutes before class so the team can help you get set up without rushing. When you check in, let the front desk know it’s your first ride — they’re used to supporting new riders and will walk you through everything.
You can expect help with:
choosing the right bike (we suggest a bike in the back so you can see the whole room)
adjusting seat height and handlebar position
learning how to clip in and out of the pedals
answering any questions before class starts
There’s no expectation to know what you’re doing before you walk in.
You don’t need anything fancy for your first class.
Most riders wear:
comfortable, fitted workout clothes
leggings or shorts that won’t bunch on the bike
a top you can move and sweat in
You’ll need cycling shoes, which can be rented at the studio if you don’t own a pair. A water bottle is recommended — and available for purchase if you forget one. We also have water fountains available if you have your own bottle.
When you enter the studio, you’ll notice the lights are low and the atmosphere is intentionally immersive and focused.
The candlelit environment helps minimize distraction and comparison. Everyone is facing forward, focused on their own bike, and there’s no pressure to perform or “keep up.” The energy is shared, but the ride is personal.
A SoulCycle class is 45 minutes long and follows a familiar rhythm.
The warm-up (about 5–7 minutes)
The music builds gradually as the instructor guides an accessible warm-up to get your body moving and introduce the rhythm of the ride.
The ride (about 35 minutes)
You’ll move through a mix of:
climbs with heavier resistance to build strength and endurance
riding at different paces, including moments of speed and stability
optional signature choreography, layered in over time
short upper-body work with light weights to support posture and strength
core engagement throughout the ride to support balance and control
Everything is guided by the music, but you control your resistance, pace, and intensity at all times.
The cool-down and stretch (about 3–5 minutes)
The class ends with stretching and a brief moment of mindfulness to help you recover and reset before heading back into your day.
Your first class will feel challenging — but manageable.
The most important thing to know is that you are always in control. Instructors offer guidance and suggestions, but you decide:
how much resistance to use
whether to sit or stand
when to slow down or take a break
It’s completely normal to take breaks, stay seated more often, or skip certain movements during your first few rides.
Yes — and they expect you to be new.
Instructors are trained to support riders of all experience levels. They:
demonstrate movements before asking you to try them
offer options and modifications throughout class
cue safety and form consistently
guide the room and provide supportive coaching, both collectively and one-on-one when helpful
Because the studio team knows it’s your first class, you will get extra support during setup and check-in. Helpful tip: Make sure to remind the staff and instructor you are new.
You’re not supposed to “keep up.”
SoulCycle isn’t a race or a competition. Riders of all levels are in every class, and many experienced riders still modify regularly. Your job is to listen to your body and ride in a way that feels sustainable for you.
Most first-time riders leave thinking: “That was hard — but not as intimidating as I expected.”
After class, instructors often stay to answer questions or check in with new riders. You may feel tired, energized, proud, or all three.
It’s normal to feel sore the next day, especially in your legs and glutes. Stretching, hydration, and light movement help.
Many people find the second class feels noticeably more comfortable than the first.
Do I need to be in shape before my first SoulCycle class?
No. SoulCycle classes are designed for all fitness levels. You control your resistance and pace, and instructors expect beginners.
Is it okay to sit during class?
Absolutely. Sitting in the saddle is the most stable place to learn and connect to the pace and resistance.
What if I’ve never used clip-in shoes before?
That’s very common. The studio team will help you clip in before class, and instructors explain how to clip out safely at the end.
Will I be the only beginner in the room?
Probably not. New riders are in classes every day, and many experienced riders continue to modify.
What if I don’t love my first class?
Give it two or three classes before deciding. Coaching styles and music vary, and finding the right instructor fit can change the experience significantly.
