Soul Transformation: Stacey Harper

Three years ago STACEY HARPER began a total life makeover. With extraordinary dedication, she dropped an incredible 200 pounds and 11 sizes while becoming happier and healthier. Now a dedicated part of the Bay Area pack, Stacey shares her Soul Transformation…

In 2012, I realized that I was on a bad path physically and in a bad marriage, and I decided to get healthy through diet and exercise. On January 1, 2012, I weighed 368 pounds (size 28/30) and since then have worked to lose around 200 pounds to get to a size 6/8.

This has been an incredible journey for me which included getting a divorce and having to learn to love myself, fitness, and realizing that I could not do this for anyone else but myself. I wanted to be healthy when I turned 30, which was on December 7, 2013.

I struggled with my addiction to food, but I learned how to eat healthy, found the exercise that I find motivating, and discovered who my true supporters are. I have also learned that it is a constant struggle and some months are much easier or harder than others, but that ultimately I must not lose faith in myself.

While I was living in Cleveland, a friend of mine suggested that I try indoor cycling, and I fell in love with it. It helped me to shape my fitness goals and find what I really enjoy about myself. More importantly, I traveled to New York City for work frequently and discovered SoulCycle. Compared to the type of cycling I was doing in Cleveland, SoulCycle was another level of enjoyment I didn't realize was available to me.

In April 2014, I relocated to San Francisco to be closer to my brother. I didn't realize how hard I would struggle with finalizing my divorce in June 2014, discovering a new city, and recognizing the dramatic differences the West Coast had to the East Coast (aka, finding my niche). The one place I knew and felt comfortable was SoulCycle, as it provided the comforts of a place I felt safe and secure.

Over the course of 2014 and early 2015, I gained back roughly 30 to 40 pounds of the weight I had lost because I just lost focus on my fitness goals while adjusting to my new city. I didn't feel proud or good about myself.

When SoulCycle offered Turn It Up 20 in March, I used it as a chance to really refocus myself. I finished the 20 classes in 18 days (due to work travel impeding some of my time in March). Since the beginning of March, I have shed 25 to 30 pounds, and I continue to make SoulCycle a focus in my life. It has helped reinvigorate my fitness goals and my love for caring for my body.

More importantly, I appreciate the message that SoulCycle provides — that this is an inner journey as much as an outer one. It is the place I go to when I need to de-stress or work out my inner demons and frustrations.

When the Castro studio opened just two blocks from my house in June, I couldn't have been be happier. I feel very blessed to have the means and opportunity to belong to such a valuable community of people to help me to continue on my journey as a person.
