orCal instructor TANNER BASSETT harbors a secret love for Carly Rae Jepsen and '90s fashion. Get to know him, ahead.
1. What is on your bucket list?
To take my mom to Scotland. Her dad was from there and she has talked about going for as long as I can remember. One Christmas I swear I'm going to surprise her with a trip.
2. Where did you grow up?
I actually grew up in Northern California! After about 12 years between Los Angeles and New York City though, I came back to help the Berkeley studio, which I find to be so awesome and full circle. I'm getting to show SoulCycle — something I love so much — to the people I love the most. There's something really special about spreading SOUL at home.
3. What food can you not live without?
PIZZA! Shout to Soeuraya Wilson and Rachel Loebs, my fellow instructor pizza posse.
4. Who is the funniest person you know?
Tough one. Probably my childhood best friend Leilana. We've been best friends for almost 15 years and no matter what comes out of her mouth, I end up in tears from laughter.
5. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?
Probably the endless amounts of concert tickets I was given over the years as a kid. Music is such a huge part of my life and almost therapeutic for me. It's the same for my dad, so many of my gifts as a kid were concert tickets and we would go all over the Bay Area to check out new music.
6. First thing you do in the morning?
Ugh, I hate to admit it but probably look at my phone. Then run to the kitchen for an iced coffee, stat.
7. What’s one thing people would never guess about you?
I’m mildly obsessed with Carly Rae Jepsen (insert monkey emoji holding its mouth closed).
8. What’s on your bedside table?
A lamp, a weird little ugly stuffed animal creature a friend made me in high school and various chewed-up things I had to pry from my puppy's mouth.
9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
If you want something bad enough, never take no for an answer. Constantly searching for my yes has brought me to some of the most incredible places in my life.
10. What’s the background on your computer?
The SOUL mantra.
11. Pool or ocean?
I was a swimmer growing up so I should say pool but like, SALT WATER FOR LIFE. So ocean.
12. What are your pet peeves?
Filing my own nails. I know that sounds so weird but the feeling of a file board going across my nails makes me shudder.
13. What is your go-to splurge?
Always, always food. I never feel any guilt for dropping some coins on a good meal, though.
14. What is your must-have item in your closet?
Flannel and a leather jacket. '90s much?
15. If you could use only one product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I'm gonna roll with that cheap apricot face scrub you can buy anywhere. Sweating so much makes my skin oily, so I'm all about a scrub.
16. Last concert you went to?
This British singer Raleigh Ritchie. He's AMAZING, check him out.
17. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
18. How do you take your coffee?
19. Next trip you’re planning to take?
I've been going for years to my annual pilgrimage into the desert, aka Burning Man, so that's up next.
20. What is your theme song?
I've been staring at this question for 10 minutes cause it's so hard for me to answer. I'm going to roll with Alanis Morissette, "Head Over Feet."
21. What was your first SoulCycle experience?
I can't really remember my very first one, but I vividly remember my second. All I have to say is Janet Fitzgerald!! It was a 10:30am in the West Village. I'll never forget it, I left in complete tears. A woman in the hallway had to ask me if I was OK. I had no idea that working out could evoke so much emotion. I kept coming back every Tuesday and Thursday and would hide in the back and literally sob. It completely changed my life, so thank you, Janet!
