Maddy's Tips and Tricks for Staying Positive

eet MADDY. The Boston instructor did a stint in Los Angeles before moving to the East Coast, loves breakfast sandwiches and hazelnut lattes, and just so happens to be one of the most positive, bubbly people you will ever meet. In an attempt to emulate even one tenth of her happy energy, SOUL caught up with Maddy to learn her ways.

1. Do you have any mantras you use when life is bringing you down?

Oh, mantras are what basically keep me going. They are like your little reminders to keep shining and keep on keeping on. One that I've been using a lot lately is, "It doesn't get easier, you just get stronger." I say it over and over until whatever I'm doing doesn't seem as bad anymore. To be honest, when my alarm goes off at 4:30AM for my Roosters, this mantra gets me out the door every time.

2. What tips or tricks do you use to stay positive and energetic?

This is kind of another mantra, but it's one of my best tips: "Protect your magic." As instructors, we open ourselves up to a lot of people, and that comes with a lot of different exchanges of energy. We all give so much in that room, and everyone brings a lot of different things into it: good, bad, happy, sad, angry, and everything in-between. I think it's important to remember that when I leave the studio I do exactly that... LEAVE IT ALL IN THERE.
You can develop your own little process, author Gabby Bernstein makes the physical motions of zipping herself up, Janet Fitzgerald has a "break the energy" routine, some instructors clap... I always end every class the same way with a little mantra: "May you always be joyful, loving, and above all else, fearless." It seals the studio.

3. Other than SOUL, what activities always make you happy?

Yoga, although I don't do it as often as I would like! Izzy VanHall is one of my favorite teachers in Boston. For my Los Angelinos, every Monday night I used to go to Bhakti Yoga Shala in Santa Monica and we would sing and dance. It's seriously one of the things I miss the most about L.A. Dancing — anytime I am really upset I go take a dance class. When I'm learning choreography I can't focus on anything else except the next move or else I fall behind. Its a complete release for me... always has been and alway will be! DAYBREAKER. If you've never been, buy a ticket and go! Rollerblading. I have not ventured as much here in Boston, but when all else fails, just cruise! The beach. My two favorites are Westward in Malibu and Second Beach in Newport, RI.

Purchase the book Spirit Junkie by Gabrielle Bernstein if you haven't already read it. That book saved my life!

I wear a lot of glitter — it's like my armor. People look at me like I'm a little insane, but it reminds me to sparkle and be all that I can be even if I don't feel 100 percent that day!

Pet lots of dogs while you are out and about. They are an energy changer and an easy and quick pick-me-up.
