SoulScholarship Story: Keshia Maryat

SoulScholar KESHIA MARYAT shares how the SoulScholarship program has helped her set goals and live a healthier life…
I am a senior at The Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women in Brooklyn, and am in Phase One of the SoulScholarship program in partnership with the Carrera Program at the Children's Aid Society, which is how I was introduced to SoulCycle.
Before SoulCycle, I was pretty active; I would even jog along Eastern Parkway on Sundays. But riding at SoulCycle is so different for me. I never knew you could work out so much on a bike, especially with the [weighted] arms section and all of the moves.
The first class I took with Rachel W. was tough. We had only had one other class before, and I didn’t expect it to be so much work (or to use so much upper body strength!) But it was great, and I had a lot of fun!
SoulScholarship has helped me stay healthy, which is really important for me. My mom has high blood pressure, so I don’t eat a lot of salty foods or fast food. My meals are a usually a lot of salads, grilled chicken, fish and granola bars. The nutrition class SoulScholarship offered us just helped me even more with eating right.
The program is helping me set goals for myself. I would like to be even healthier, outside of my weekend jog. I think if I keep this up, it will help me stay more active on more than just the weekends.
SoulCycle has also been a great release for me. Whenever Rachel W. says don’t stress and let everything out on the bike, I do. This saying, and working out at SoulCycle, even helps me when I’m stressed in school.
Everyone has been so supportive, too. We recently worked on making resumes, and it was extremely helpful. I’ve never made a resume before, and now I feel prepared in making one. This program and SoulCycle have been so beneficial to me.
