Rachel Rivas on Confidence, Leading the Pack and SOUL Down South
September 28, 2016
nstructor RACHEL RIVAS opens up about how she discovered SOUL, what inspired her to become an instructor and why she felt motivated to move home to lead the pack in Austin...
What first brought you to SOUL?
I was visiting New York with a good friend back in April 2013. I had heard about SoulCycle from friends in Austin, but had no idea what I was in for. I knew I need to experience it for myself. Best decision I ever made.
Tell us about your first class.
It was with Jolie — who's now back and leading the pack — at Union Square. I don’t remember much because I’m pretty sure I blacked out halfway through. The energy was something I had never felt before in any form of workout. I think my competitive nature kicked in and I tried to keep up, but had a few moments of, How on earth do I do this? I loved it so much I came back the next day.
What kept you coming back?
I moved to Los Angeles later that year and started riding with Pixie in West Hollywood. I’ve never met someone so confident in who they are. I think a combination of her energy and the community at that studio made me look forward to coming every Tuesday and Thursday night.
What inspired you to become an instructor?
I knew I wanted to give others the feeling I had when I was a rider — confidence in who you are. It wasn’t until I became an instructor that I realized that the riders’ stories are what inspires me to lead the pack and continue to feel confident in and out of the studio.
Tell us what motivated you to move to back to Austin, Texas.
Austin is a magical place. The city has that heartbeat that I loved about living in LA, NY and DC, but still has a small town feel. Oh... and of course my family and friends.
What do you love about bringing SOUL to Austin?
I love sharing something I'm so passionate about with my hometown.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
The mantra that inspires you is…
Be confident enough to encourage confidence in others.
Favorite song to rock out to on the bike?
"Power" by Kanye West.
Word of the SOUL mantra that describes you?
Rockstar. It's fitting for being back in AUSTIN!
