Working At SoulCycle: A Day With Senior Charity Manager Ashley Mashihi
ello! I'm Ashley Mashihi and I work in SoulCycle's Philanthropy department. Our team handles all things charitable at SoulCycle, from our SoulScholarship program to charity rides to employee volunteerism and more.
I’ve been with the company for four years… I started back when we only had 14 studios! (Now we have more than 70!) Most of my day involves working out of SOUL’s HQ office in New York City’s West Village neighborhood, but I also regularly work from studios that are hosting events and rides for our philanthropic programs.
Here’s a glimpse of my day-to-day routine (hint, it starts with coffee and ends with a SOUL class):
8:30 AM: I grab a coffee from the darling place across the street from my apartment called The Elk, and walk over to the office. My commute is less than 10 minutes and is a great way to energize my mornings.
9 AM: I’m at my desk and ready for action. I block off the first couple of hours of my mornings so I can focus on projects and programming related to our SoulScholarship program. SoulScholarship’s mission is to bring the joy of movement and the benefits of fitness to underserved adolescents. We partner with social service agencies and high schools in areas that demonstrate the greatest need and provide a 10-week program to students. The program includes health, nutrition and job readiness workshops as well as two complimentary SoulCycle classes per week with all of the necessary workout gear and healthy snacks at each visit. We remain connected to and supportive of our students through mentorship and continued riding after graduation from our program.
11:30 AM: I’ll order lunch or run out to grab a soup from Good Stock. My colleagues call me the LQ (it stands for lunch queen) because I always make sure to get something good for lunch!
1 PM: I spend the afternoon on calls and Google Hangouts with team members and studios who help oversee our SoulScholarship program in our outer markets. Right now, we're running programs in NYC, DC, LA and Chicago! The teams and I work together to formulate the different workshops held in each market – we’ll look internally at the SoulCycle staff to see which of our employees are best to lead a specific workshop. We’ll also reach out to our riders, including local nutritionists and professionals, to help add to the workshop programming.
I'll also spend time meeting with the different departments at SOUL to help determine the best ways to engage each specific team in volunteer opportunities. SoulCycle employees receive two paid days to volunteer. This year my team is volunteering at God's Love We Deliver.
3:45 PM: Now it’s off to spend time with our current SoulScholarship students. I’ll head to the Brooklyn Heights or 92nd Street studio to ride with the participants and lead some fun icebreakers and team bonding activities.
5:30 PM: After class, I’ll spend time with the students and take song requests for their next ride. What’s better than hearing your favorite song in class!?
I love my job is because I get to combine my passion of giving back with my love for SoulCycle. For any questions on our programs or to ride with our SoulScholars, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
