SoulCycle Q&A: AlunaGeorge, iLoveMakonnen, Neon Indian and TOKiMONSTA

ALUNAGEORGE
When was your first show?
My first show ever was 8 years ago. It was an open mic show in England. I did it a cappella.

What's changed between then and now?
Everything. I've learned to sing, to make music, and to perform.

If you weren't an artist, what would you be doing?
I would probably be a sculptor. I did art before music and I have always loved to make things with my hands. Carving wood and things like that.

Which song never fails to get the crowd pumped up?
In the entire universe? “Jump Around” by House of Pain.

Number of times at SXSW?
One. This was my first time at SXSW

What's your motto or mantra?
It's all going to turn out alright in the end.

Something you want to do before you leave Austin?
I want to get to Barton Springs.

Who's the most SOULful person you know?
My auntie Olivia. She is unflappable. She is very supportive and intelligent.

First concert you ever attended?
Glatenbury.

Song you can't stop listening to now?
“Rewind” by Kelela.

What inspires you?
People's stories.

Anything you want to add?
I think SoulCycle, and the riders are the next level up of human.

ILOVEMAKONNEN
When was your first show?
My first show ever was in an apartment in Park Slope. My first official show was May 3, 2012 in Brooklyn at the Silent Barn.

What's changed between then and now?
Everything!

If you weren't an artist, what would you be doing?
Probably working in an office somewhere. I would go to college, too.

Which song never fails to get the crowd pumped up?
“I Don’t Sell Molly No More.”

Number of times at SXSW?
One.

What's your motto or mantra?
Drink More Water!

What is Drink More Water 6?
My new music release for 2016 preparing us for the spring and summer! It came out today!

Something you want to do before you leave Austin?
Eat some good BBQ!

Who's the most SOULful person you know?
Marcus Daniels! One of the biggest bikers I’ve ever met in my life.

First concert you ever attended?
Crystal Castles in Atlanta at Masquerade.

Song you can't stop listening to now?
"Give Me A Sign" by the Vaccines. They aren’t new but I just discovered their music and love it.

What inspires you?
Knowing that we’re all on earth for a limited time only. And Taylor Swift.

Anything you want to add?
Drink more water, keep a positive attitude, and enjoy life!

NEON INDIAN
When was your first show?
First show when when I was 18; it was called Rubber Gloves in Denton, Texas and I still remember the lineup: It was Ghost Hustler, Eat Avery's Bones, David Wright and Cry Blood.

What's changed between then and now?
More synthesizers.

If you weren't an artist, what would you be doing?
Filmmaking, but if I wasn't an artist in the pejorative sense of the word, I would probably do environmental law or climate change research.

Which song never fails to get the crowd pumped up?
"Temporary Secretary" by Paul McCartney. I always drop that in a DJ set and there’s no reason why it should go off, but for some reason people just love it.

Number of times at SXSW?
You know it’s funny, I'd almost broken the 10-year mark three years ago, and I didn't know that it was an accomplishment. So I was like, Dude, you need to find something else to do in March…  This can’t be the only thing you do in March. But um, because at that point I was already done touring, I said, you know what? Until the next record is done, the next punishment to myself for procrastinating on the record is you can’t go to Moe Fest, SXSW or Coachella. So I think NOW is officially the 10-year mark!

Something you love to do in Austin?
Eat at Tamale House on the East Side, one of my favorite spots.

Whose the most SOULful person you know?
Probably my high school literary magazine teacher; she was very soulful.

The first concert you ever attended?
I didn't really go to concerts at all until I got really into music, so the first one I drove up to Austin to go see was Carabou, Junior Boys and Russian Futurists. I think it would have been in 2003.

The song you can’t stop listening to now?
It was in my DJ set: “Starstrike” by SoundStream

What inspires you?
Non-fiction.

Anything you want to add about your experience at The Spotify House with SoulCycle?
I didn't know what to expect, and I'm glad it was unexpected!

TOKIiMONSTA
When was your first show?
I have no idea. I can guarantee that there were probably less than 20 people, and I wasn't sure what I was doing.

What's changed between then and now?
Now there are usually more than 20 people and I relatively know what I'm doing.

If you weren't an artist, what would you be doing?
Something with food.

Which song never fails to get the crowd pumped up?
My remix of “2 On” by Tinashe

Number of times at SXSW?
Five to six times, I think.

What's your motto or mantra?
Just be yourself.

Something you want to do before you leave Austin?
Eat BBQ not in the airport.

Who's the most SOULful person you know?
I know a lot of soulful people, I guess Anderson Paak is my friend really pushing the soul.

First concert you ever attended?
Atmosphere show at the Showbox in LA.

Song you can't stop listening to now?
“Uber Everywhere” by Madeintyo.

What inspires you?
Everything!

Anything you want to add?
Someone save me a place in line at Franklin BBQ please.
