6 Original Riders Reflect on 10 Years of SOUL

CATHY BUXTON

How did you hear about SoulCycle?
Through the grapevine before W72nd Street even opened. I had experienced "boutique cycling" in the Hamptons and LA, so I was super excited to check it out. Needless to say, I never took an indoor cycling class at a gym again.

What's your strongest memory of our first studio?
Oh, wow... hard question, since there are so many. Julie Rice's warm welcome; the dark room; the grapefruit candles; the amazing AHA moment when you realize a whole room of people are completely in sync.

Where do you tap it back now?
E83 and the Barn.

What's one word you'd use to describe SoulCycle?
Synchronicity.

What keeps you tapping it back today?
It’s one of my happy places. No matter what may be going on in my life, if I just keep jumping on a bike, everything is better. I ride at 7:30 AM with Stacy every single day and she inspires me, grounds me, sets up the day and keeps pushing me to seek my best self physically, emotionally and spiritually. Honestly, the community of teacher, front desk peeps, fellow riders, the room and the music prepare you to live your life with love and strength.

LORI ABELES

How did you first find out about SoulCycle?
I knew one of the founding partners, and she kept me in the loop as the plans to open SoulCycle came together. I was there for the opening cocktail party and the very first ride! #ActualOGSoul

What's your strongest memory of our first studio?
There are so many! The narrowest, sweatiest hallway… standing on the wooden bench and peeking over the top of the frosted glass wall to cheer someone on… the first time I rode Stacey's bike on the podium… the bamboo garden out back. I was so happy every time I clipped in and rode. In those days, you could kind of get any bike you wanted. As a rider, Bike 2 was my happy place.

What's one word you'd use to describe SoulCycle?
Life-changing. Literally. For me, for my riders, and for SOUL communities springing up everywhere.

What inspired you to become an instructor?
The music. The community. The bike. #LOVETRIFECTA

LISA DIETER

How did you first find out about SoulCycle?
I was a member of an indoor cycling at a gym when I first learned about a new studio focused solely on indoor cycling. I just had to try it!

What's your strongest memory of our first studio?
The 'sweaty hallway.' Upon arriving to class, I’d think, I just need to make it down this hallway and paradise awaits!

Where do you tap it back now?
West 77th, West 92 and East 83rd.

What's one word you'd use to describe SoulCycle?
Transformative.

What keeps you tapping it back today?
It's simply the best indoor cycling in NYC — the finest instructors, music, facilities and front desk staff. SC has never lost the personal touch since its first days on 72nd street.

Happy 10th anniversary, SoulCycle!

MAYRA HERNANDEZ

How did you first find out about SoulCycle?
Through a friend.
What's your strongest memory of our first studio?
It was a very small place where BIG things were taking place! In addition to the amazing workout, I loved the messaging and the graphics. The staff and instructors were amazing and a great community was rising.

Where do you tap it back now?
W77th, W92nd and TriBeCa.

What's one word you'd use to describe SoulCycle?
INSPIRATIONAL.

What keeps you clipping in and tapping it back today?
It's a very efficient workout for the body, mind and SOUL and I get inspired every time I go there. CONGRATULATIONS! Happy 10th!

AMY WASSERMAN

How did you first find out about SoulCycle?
I live on West 72nd, so I saw that a new studio was opening. I took my first class and became hooked. It's more than just a ride...

What’s your strongest memory of our first studio?
My strongest memory is of the community within the class. We are all there for the same rush.

Where do you tap it back now?
I tap it back at soul cycle West 77th.

What's one word you'd use to describe SoulCycle?
Fulfilling.

What keeps you tapping it back today?
I keep coming back because it keeps me healthy and clears my head. It's my own 45-minute therapy session.

MICHELLE GRADY

How did you first find out about SoulCycle?
I saw a small advertisement on the back of one of the free newspapers they give away at the subway stations.

What's your strongest memory of our first studio?
Seclusion; the smell of the candles; the friendliness of the instructors and front desk staff and last, but not least, my first class.

Where do you tap it back now?
Mainly Union Square with the fabulous Danny Kopel.

What's one word you'd use to describe SoulCycle?
Enjoyment.

What keeps you tapping it back today?
The dedication of the instructors, who provide an excellent workout in an enjoyable way.
