The Music That Made Yael Gross
August 15, 2016
nstructor YAEL GROSS shares the music and lyrics that inspire her, on and off the bike...
Music can have a profound impact on someone. From amazing lyrics to the beat of the music, each part of a song can cause you to feel a different emotion or inspire you in a different way. Here are 10 songs that move me.
1. “Just Say Yes” by Snow Patrol
“Just say yes. Just say there's nothing holding you back. It's not a test nor a trick of the mind, only love..."
This song emits the glass-half-full feeling. I heard it for the first time at SOUL W77th in 2012 in Lori A.’s class. It was our “go home” song and every time that we ran out of the saddle, there was no way I was going to give up and sit down because the lyrics were so loud and clear — JUST SAY YES (I CAN, I WILL)!
2. “Lose Yourself” by Eminem
“Look, if you had one shot, one opportunity to seize everything you've ever wanted in one moment, would you capture it or let it slip?… Lose yourself in the music, the moment, you own it, you better never let it go. You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow, this opportunity comes once in a lifetime..."
Melanie Griffith played this song during our first week of SOUL training (right before one of our more intense drills) to get our group fired up. What began as a casual head bob to the beat manifested into an intense huddle of more than 20 bodies jumping together, chanting the lyrics with hands in the air. Melanie wanted to show us that we can do anything we set our minds to — and she clearly got her message across.
3. “Pumping Blood” by NONONO (The Chainsmokers Remix)
“This is your heart. It's alive, it's pumping blood.”
Sometimes we all need a reminder of how lucky we are just to have a pulse, to be present and to be alive.
4. “Hashem Melech” by Gad Elbaz
This is a Hebrew prayer remixed into an EDM song. I am very spiritual person and I love anything that reminds me there is a higher source than all of us that is protecting us, watching over us and guiding us in directions we sometimes may not understand, but know that so long as we have faith we will be okay.
5. “Wait for It” from Hamilton: The Musical
“Life doesn't discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes, we keep living anyway. We rise and we fall and we break and we make our mistakes and if there's a reason I'm still alive while so many have died, I'm willing to wait for it."
I've never seen Hamilton (I know, crazy!) but I'm completely in love with the soundtrack. This song represents so many of the same qualities we have and we share at SoulCycle — drive, perseverance, patience, persistence and dedication. I blast this song in my car and sing along, even if I'm off key. Nothing makes me happier.
6. “Take Me to the Clouds Above” by LMC vs. U2
“Take me, take me to the clouds above. Tell me if it’s really love.”
This song is the perfect remix of Whitney Houston and U2, and also mentally takes me to the beautiful, carefree, joyous, sunny shores of St. Tropez. It's also the perfect arm song in class.
7. “The Sound of Silence” by J2 (remix)
“’Neath the halo of a street lamp, I turned my collar to the cold and damp when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the night and touched the sound of silence.”
The drums and guitar in this song are so strong and 'heavy,' this song basically adds resistance on your bike without you even noticing it. It's so powerful that the sound of the drums literally travel into your legs, making this song the perfect way to finish your ride stronger than you started!
8. “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten
"This is my fight song, take back my life song, prove I'm alright song. My power's turned up. I’ll be strong. I’ll play my fight song and I don't really care if nobody else believes, ‘cause I still got a lot of fight left in me..."
A close friend of mine went through a very tough journey last year and this song helped her through it. Every time I'd play this song, I thought of her, how strong she is and how proud I am of her and all of us who have come out the other side of a challenging moment.
9. “Heartbeat” by Vicetones
“I could feel your heartbeat. I could feel the sun when you’re looking down.”
The sound of this song makes me want to run out of the saddle forever! I listen to it on days I run outside and it just puts me in a good mood when I listen to it.
10. “Find a Way” by Dirty South ft. Rudy
“Til our world's collide, I'm here forever until I'll find you. And signs on my side, I'll wait forever. I know I'll find you. I will find a way.”
This song is so positive and reminds us that no matter what stands in our way, if we want something bad enough, we will find a way. It's also on my running playlist and when I need the extra pick-me-up on my final mile, I play this song and it brings me home.
