Soul Q&A: Radio City Rockette Lauren Renck
June 20, 2016
o inside the daily routine of a Radio City Rockette! Dancer LAUREN RENCK — now performing in New York Spectacular — talked to us about how she trains, what she eats and why riding at SoulCycle keeps her strong…
How long have you been a Radio City Rockette?
What got you into dancing?
My mom put me in dance class when I was two and I never stopped!
What it’s like to train as a Rockette. What is a typical day like for you?
During the rehearsal season we are in the studio six hours per day, six days per week. Performing in New York Spectacular and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is very physically demanding, so we have to stay in shape year round. Personally, I had to find a way to build and keep my cardio endurance and that’s why SoulCycle has been such an integral part of my workout regimen. It’s a low-impact way to push my cardio limits, strengthen my legs, and get in a blast of upper body toning.
How to do you prepare for rehearsals?
During our rehearsal process, I usually get to the studio an hour early so I can warm up and review choreography. We move through the show material very quickly so it’s imperative to always be prepared. After rehearsal, I jump in an ice bath and head home to rest and prepare for the next day.
Ice bath? Brrr. What about on show days?
On show days I give myself an hour and half to prepare. Each Rockette does her own hair and makeup for each show, and I have a set routine of what I like to do to get my body warmed-up for each performance. For New York Spectacular, we perform in up to ten shows per week.
You’re dancing and using your body so much every day. How do you keep up your endurance while staying healthy?
New York Spectacular pushes the Rockettes to a new level of athleticism and strength, so in addition to SoulCycle, I incorporate cross-training activities into my workout routine. To balance the cardio of indoor cycling, I turn to Pilates, yoga and weight training to keep up with my strength and flexibility. Rest and recovery is also key; it’s necessary to allow the body to heal and get stronger. I take ice baths at the end of every day and make sure to keep on track with physical therapy exercises for past injuries.
What fuels your performances and rehearsals? What items do you always have stocked in your fridge/pantry?
New York Spectacular is running for eight weeks — now through August 7, and we perform in up to 10 shows per week, so we have to know what works for our bodies in order to prepare for our busy days. I typically start my morning with oatmeal with fruit, greek yogurt, or whole grain toast with peanut butter. I make sure to watch my caffeine intake and hydrate with a lot of water throughout the day. On breaks, I snack on hummus and nuts and I like to end my day with carbs that will fuel my body for the next day of dancing.
What’s your favorite way to de-stress?
I turn to yoga. It’s a great way to stay flexible, strengthen my body and give my mind a break from my busy and active schedule.
Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Guacamole and chips… lots of chips.
How did you discover SoulCycle?
My roommate is an avid rider so I decided to try out a class with her in my off-season. After one class I decided this was the ideal low-impact cardio workout I needed to round out my fitness practices. I was excited to find a workout that rivaled the cardio we do in our shows. New York Spectacular is incredibly athletic — it’s 85 minutes of non-stop action. I was thrilled to find something that got my heart racing just as much as performing on the Great Stage!
Tell us about your first ride.
It was sweaty! I loved how the instructor used the music to motivate the riders and how the rhythm was a key part of class. As a dancer, music is essential. I dance to Christmas music for a large portion of the year so being in SoulCycle class is always a treat. Now between the contemporary music we dance to in the New York Spectacular and my SoulCycle classes, my Spotify is up to date!
Favorite song to ride to?
"Kill the Lights" from HBO’s Vinyl.
Do you have a mantra that inspires you?
As Rockettes we have a saying, “Together we’re better.” We say this because it takes all 36 women to achieve our unparalleled look of precision. We depend on one another to make it through tough rehearsals and long show days. I find the vibe to be similar in the SoulCycle studio. I love the feeling of community and support that I find at my studio!
