ART + SOUL

Artist Gregory Siff Talks Summer Treats, Breaking a Sweat and His Latest Art Installation

ou might have seen artist GREGORY SIFF’s amazing work in your local SOUL studio, but his talents go far beyond Athlete, Rockstar and Renegade. In honor of his latest art installation in East Hampton, he sat down with us to share his favorite places in NYC and the Hamptons to catch some rays, fuel up after tapping it back and more…

We love the summer treats you painted and want to know how you unwind in the warmer months! Where is your favorite spot to grab an outdoor drink in the summer?
My favorite place to hang outside in NYC is the Rockaway Beach Surf Club in my hometown. It hosts an enclave of surfers, artists, locals and good people, and it’s the place where I painted murals in the bathrooms for MoMA PS1's group show in support of the victims of Hurricane Sandy. You never know who you are going to run into at the bar. Plus, all great musicians know to hang here and get a cold one and taco from Tacoway on the premises.

Favorite ways to break a sweat in the summer (besides SOUL)?
I like to break a sweat swimming and boogie boarding in Belle Harbor, Queens in the Rockaways, where the waves are clean and there is family everywhere.

Favorite summer treat?
I love to grab a chocolate shake from Mister Softee from the truck in NYC — there's no Softee in LA! Also, John’s Pancake House in Montauk is so bomb.

Favorite spot to catch some sun?
On the 140th Street beach block in Rockaway and just past the Memory Motel in Montauk. Both spots are so clean and zen.

Go-to place to fuel up post-SOUL?
Dunkin! Iced! I also love Ellery's Greens in the East Village in NYC. It’s vegan, organic, delicious and a beautiful part of the neighborhood.

Where is your favorite place to grab a healthy, delicious dinner?
My mom’s house in Rockaway — she makes the best pasta and grilled chicken Paillard!

What is the song that embodies summer to you?
“Gratitude” by The Beastie Boys. The lyrics are amazing:

It's so free, this kind of feeling
It’s like life, it’s so appealing
When you’ve got so much to say
It’s called gratitude, and that’s right.

What inspired your latest art installation?
The feeling of being young, running down the block to catch the ice cream man and the thrill and euphoric state of the capture and reward of finally tasting the ice cream. The whole process. I painted it to encapsulate that emotion and share it with everyone. That's where I am with my life!

When and where can we catch you in the act?

Catch me at Gallery Valentine in East Hampton (33 Newtown Lane) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturday, August 13th. I'll be painting the glass and have selections of my newest show, Portrait of an American Ice Cream Man, on display! There is also a SOUL piece hanging in the show… I wonder who who will get it!
