Last Friday and Saturday nights, SoulCycle held its most ambitous rides ever. Theater and fitness merged for two very special PERFORMANCE RIDES of MOULIN ROUGE! Master Instructor JANET FITZGERALD was the ring leader, hosting a 60-minute live enactment of the show complete with opera singers, dancers, and musical talent (performed by our own amazing Soul instructors and staff)! More than just a workout, these performances were celebrations of community, music, theater, and life.
Okay SoulCyclists, get ready to flock the theaters this weekend because PREMIUM RUSH featuring SoulCycle's very own KYM PERFETTO opens nationwide TODAY! You're sure to witness some serious riding and learn why we like to keep our bikes indoors!
When SoulCycle received an email from CARA RABIN, it was a good reminder that Soul success stories come in all different forms. Having suffered from severe anorexia nervosa, Cara gained 30 lbs this year, a huge accomplishment on her road to recovery. But in many ways, Cara's story is stinkingly similar to others on this blog. She was drawn to the supportive Soul community, classes that put the joy back in fitness and the realization that strong trumps skinny any day of the week!
This past Saturday, Soul Scarsdale perfected their fist pump and waved their lighters in the air as GABRIELLE WISE continued her theme ride series with an ALL LIVE RIDE! Riding to live concert tracks spanning every musical genre and decade, we sweat it out as we sang along. And with prizes for riders who wear their favorite concert tee, it was a ride to remember!
You don't often see much crossover between early childhood graduate students and fitness instructors. But when you ride with Soul Instructor LINDSAY WAXER, the combination makes sense. A childlike joy comes through Lindsay's classes -- her energy palpable, smile beaming. So it's not surprising that this 80s-loving, PJ-wearing, energetic instructor makes you feel like a kid again too. And what's better than that?
Earlier this summer, ROARKE WALKER led the pack for an inspirational ride benefitting THE LOLLIPOP THEATER NETWORK, a nonprofit that helps bring the magic of movies to children confined in hospitals. The packed house rocked out to a sugary sweet playlist and sweat it out for an amazing cause. Check out pictures and the playlist below and find out more about this Soulful organization here!
A veteran ballerina and trained dancer, ISABEL YERKES has got ryhthm and Soul. But her ambitions run deeper than a dance party. Isabel wants to empower her riders through her class, teaching them, "It's not about being thin, but being confident." When you're in her classroom, you're not competing against anyone, you're riding as a pack. And with Isabel at the helm, the pack is always strong.
Yesterday morning, we broke out the shorts, shades and sunblock for a soulful celebration of surf, sunshine and everything summer. You guessed it. JULIE D rocked Roslyn with a SONGS OF SUMMER RIDE! Check out the playlist (on Spotify) and pictures below!
Every now and then, you take a ride that rocks you to the core and stirs your Soul. Rockstar GREGG BARD spontaneously wrote and shared this beautiful post about his first Soul Challenge with Stacey Griffith (and we felt it definitely warranted re-posting on the Soul Blog!) Thank you Gregg -- accounts like these remind us why we do what we do.
Last night we put aside the Rock vs. Rap rivalry and opted for something more harmonious: ROCK/RAP COLLABORATIONS! With LORI ABELES leading the helm, we were head-banging, fist-pumping and booty-shaking to tunes with rock AND rhythm. No matter where your allegiances lie, this ride had something for everyone. Check out pics, playlist and music videos below!
During a recent ride, Soul instructor Lori Abeles gave a shout-out to the new riders in the room: "You never know what's going to happen when you walk in here for your first class." That's certainly true for JAIME GLEICHER. Who could have guessed that 365 days after her first ride (and 377 classes later!), Jaime would have new friends, new mentors, a new body, new confidence and a new outlook on life? Below, Jaime has written an honest and beautiful reflection of her Soul journey and what a difference a year makes.
Our chief mission at SoulCycle is transformation. We've been so blessed to hear back from riders who have found themselves transformed in more ways than one: the incredible stories of weight loss, restored confidence and the people who have had their hearts opened by what happens in those dark, candle-lit studios. But every once in a while, we hear a story that stops us right in our tracks. The stomach cancer diagnosis couldn't have come at a worse time for JEE WON PARK. The news came to her when she was 34, mother to a newborn and jobless, another casualty of the recession. This is Jee Won's story of struggle, Soul and survival.
Jee Won, in the middle.
Soul Instructors are always on-the-go and JULIE DERMER is no exception. Teaching multiple classes in Roslyn and Scarsdale while raising two kids in the city is no small feat. But Julie loves the challenge and seems to take it all in stride. We asked Julie D what she carries with her in order to balance her busy schedule, healthy lifestyle, vibrant social life and the ever-present duties of motherhood!
A musculoskeletal radiologist who is an expert in diagnosing sports-related injuries, JARETT BURAK started to sympathize with his patients when he couldn't find an intense fitness regimen that was also kind on his body. But 10 months in, Jarett is still pushing himself at Soul- and the results are impressive. He compares the feeling of a great class to that of a great concert and, we gotta say, we love seeing him rock out on that bike!
Meet LUCINDA ORA, a talented singer songwriter, Twitter personality and SoulCycle addict more affectionately known as "Red." Lucinda's life at Soul and her music career are overlapping more and more: riders from Soul have been known to stop by her shows after class and Lucinda even names SoulCycle on her performance prep list. A valued member of our community, you won't want to miss her Soul Story.
Even though Soul has been around for six years, we're still finding ways to design new rides, set new challenges and acheive new goals. And this last week was no exception. On Thursday, Master Instructor Laurie Cole completed SoulCycle's first-ever BICOASTAL RIDE! That's right. She started her morning teaching a 9:30AM ride in TriBeCa and by the end of the night, taught a 7:30PM Led Zeppelin ride in WEHO (Los Angeles). Even though it felt like 10:30PM to her body, Laurie didn't let a little jet lag stop her -- she rocked the Led class, bringing her unique blend of rhythm and Soul from coast to coast. Now who's in for the next bicoastal ride?
According to DORIS RICHARDS, every professional athlete would benefit from a ride at SoulCycle. And that's quite a compliment coming from a three-time national champion spring board diver! Although Doris doesn't dive competitively anymore, you can see her athletic drive unleashed in each and every ride. Here's her soul story...
