Next up in our WEHO Rockstars Series is SARAH GOLDSTEIN! A true bicoastal Soul, Sarah was a rider in NYC before moving to Los Angeles last year. She attended our very first class in WEHO and has been one of our most consistent riders ever since! It's difficult to express the impact Sarah has had on our WEHO Soul Community. An incredibly generous and thoughtful person (she never misses a staff birthday!), Sarah has a positive energy that is utterly infectious. As instructor Nick Oram puts it, "Sarah truly embodies SOUL. Her commitment, loyalty, kindness and strength make it an honor to have her ride in class. She is the very reason I love what I do and am so humbled by her appreciation." A beautiful rider inside and out, our WEHO community would not be the same without her!
How did you originally hear about SoulCycle?
I grew up in Minneapolis and used to take spin classes at a studio called "The Firm." My friend Dee taught an amazing class there and when I moved to NYC, she told me I "had to" check out SoulCycle. I knew if Dee was recommending it, I would love it!
My friend Melissa and I took our first class on the Upper East Side with Lindy, back in Winter of '09. I was always into working out, but this took cardio to a new level! The music, super friendly staff, positive vibe and candlelit ambiance made working out so much fun... I couldn't wait to come back.
When did you make the switch from Soul NYC to Soul WEHO?
I moved to Los Angeles last August and, luckily, SoulCycle had already announced that they were coming to LA. To be honest, I don't know if I could have moved to a city where there wasn't Soul. Even August to February felt like a long wait!
Has your WEHO experience held up to NYC?
Yes! WEHO has been amazing from the very beginning. Before the studio opened, I walked into the pop-up shop to introduce myself and I was greeted by Lisa, Amy and Gabby. They invited me to ride with them for a trial round before the studio even opened. At that point I knew my LA Soul experience would exceed my expectations. Lisa, Iris, the WeHo front desk staff and management, along with all the instructors are my extended LA family. When Elizabeth and Julie are in town, I am always greeted with a smile and hug. There is really no community like it.
How often do you ride in WEHO?
I honestly ride as many times a week as I can, while trying to remain healthy and balanced in all areas of my life. Typically, I ride 6-8 times per week and if I am really looking to push myself to new limits, I'll take back to back classes.
How have your friends and family reacted to the Soul obsession?
Everyone has been really supportive. By now most of my friends have been to SoulCycle, so they get it. And my family has really embraced my Soul habit as well. My dad had a heart attack a few years ago so my parents are really glad that I'm keeping myself happy and healthy. In fact, my mom just happened to be in town on opening day so we went to the very first class together. My mom loved it. After class you just feel so happy and good about yourself!
But my friends know that SoulCycle has really become a big part of my life. I even celebrated my 30th Birthday in Miami, so we could start our day off at the Soul Mondrian pop-up studio!
If memory serves, you have a shirt signed by Nick Oram... how did that come about?
Ha. Yes, true story. Two of my closest friends from NYC sent me a SoulCycle Birthday package this year: which included a signed tank by Nick. It was their way of saying, "From NY, with love." :)
Nick holds a special place in my heart representing the NY periodof my life.
Nick taught in LA before NYC, so when I decided to make a move to the other coast, he was really helpful in suggesting where I might enjoy working out before Soul WeHo opened. He also has made me CDs with my favorite tunes, because we all know the music is a huge factor in our ride!
How do you choose your classes/instructors?
My first Soul love affair was with Nick. I would take his class before or after work. His music, choreography, and constant smile drew me in. I would ride beside my best friend Melissa on bike 18 at the UES studio. Other favorites include Stacey, MB, Jenny, and Rique. Stacey's inspirational words are one of my favorite parts about 'Soul.'
In WeHo, I have consistently been taking Roarke and Kym's classes. I have really enjoyed getting to know all the WeHo instructors. I have also loved riding with Janet, Laurie Cole, Melanie and Sue. These ladies are such incredible leaders and like the "big sisters I never had."
Do you have a specific fitness goal your working towards?
Fitness wise, my goal is to maintain my weight -- its not easy being 5 foot tall!
What results have you seen after so many SC classes (mental or physical)?
The more I ride, the better I feel about myself. Physically, I feel strong. Mentally, I also feel more resilient and ready to tackle life's challenges. Whenever I book a bike at SoulCycle, I know I am giving myself a block of uninterrupted "me" time.
